The Meaning of Serving God

Humans! We often question God directly or indirectly anytime we are not getting what we thought we should get from life. At times we begin to tell God, remember I am serving you and you said in your word in Exodus 23:25, which says, ” you shall serve the Lord your God; He shall bless your bread and water, and I will take sickness from your midst”.
We are very good in quoting the scriptures but have you ever ask yourself whether you are really serving God or you just think that you are serving God?
I was doing a research and then came across this site and I decided to share with you my wonderful family. What is the meaning of serving God? Below writeup will answer this question.

The Meaning of Serving God

After you have received Jesus as Lord and Saviour, you should serve God. By the word “serve,” I am not referring first to the content of what you do when serving but its essence. When I say you should serve God, it means that your entire life, which includes how you live, and what you think, say or do, must be an act of service to God. That is the essence of serving God. Thus, Paul, in Romans 6:13, urges us saying

Do not offer any part of yourself to sin as an instrument of wickedness, but rather offer yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life; and offer every part of yourself to Him as an instrument of righteousness.

When Paul says “every part,” he means that our entire life must serve God. We were slaves of sin, destined for destruction in the eternal hell but Christ paid a price with His precious life to set us free from this wicked master called Sin. Our life now belongs to the Lord Jesus Christ. For that reason, our entire life and all that we have belong to Christ. We own nothing. How you spend your money, time and what you use your abilities for must be approved by God. If you are an accountant of a company, can you use company funds to buy yourself a Mercedes Benz for your own personal use? Of course you cannot. This money does not belong to you. You need to get the approval of the boss of this company.

God is a kind and loving Master. He desires to give us the best things in life. He also desires us to enjoy life. Enjoyment of His blessings, however, must be for His glory. Thus Paul says: “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God” (1Co 10:31). Answer the following questions.

First, what is your goal in life? Your life must bring lost souls to Christ. Do you pray for the salvation of your loved ones and people around you regularly? Is your life a beautiful one such that it attracts people to Christ? Your life must be an encouragement to Christians around you. Are people who are serving with you encouraged by you?

Second, do you regularly give your offerings and tithes to God? Your strength and wisdom to work are given by God. Your opportunities to earn money are given by God. Above all, your precious gift of eternal life is given by God. Hence, it is only right that we give back a portion of what God has given us to God out of gratitude to Him. Just as it is quite unbelievable to say that you love your wife but yet you have never given her anything, if you love God, you must also give Him something. The Bible provides for us a helpful gauge as to how much we should give to the Lord: “A priest descended from Aaron is to accompany the Levites when they receive the tithes, and the Levites are to bring a tenth of the tithes up to the house of our God, to the storerooms of the treasury” (Neh 10:38). Every month, we should set aside ten percent of what we earn monthly for God. Is that a lot to give? Jesus gave you His life. How can you not out of gratitude give back to him?

Third, do you give a portion of your time daily to God? Your Heavenly Father desires to fellowship with you and bless you. That blessing comes when you hear Him to speak to you when you read His Word, the Bible and when you talk by praying to Him daily. Draw near to God daily and you will be energised by His almighty and loving presence.
